Growing in Jesus

What We Believe

We don’t all believe exactly the same thing, but we do firmly believe that Jesus Christ is the only one who can restore us to a right relationship with God.

The basic Christian message:
  • We believe in one living and true God, revealed in three persons: as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe that Jesus is the Son of God, born of the virgin Mary, truly God and truly man, who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven.
  • We believe that everyone (expect Jesus, that is) has turned away from God and has failed to keep God’s law perfectly.
  • We also believe that the only way to find real meaning in this life, and the only way to have eternal life, is to have a right relationship with God.
  • God justifies us we when confess our sins to God and trust Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord.
  • Jesus’ lived a perfect life. His undeserved death on the cross was an incredible act of God’s love to redeem us from sin.
  • Three days after the crucifixion, Jesus rose from the dead.  Now He lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, coequal in power, authority, and majesty.
  • Jesus proved that He has power over death.  His act of love means that we can all have life that lasts forever, with God.  All we need to do is confess our brokenness, accept the love He offers us and commit ourselves to following Him.
  • You can make this confession and commitment to the Lord right now!  It’s really important, though, that you share your commitment with other Christians.  Grace should be evident in a believer's life and should be shared with other people.
  • The appropriate response to this love is baptism and profession of faith.  Every Christian is baptized into ministry (not just pastors) and is commanded to love and serve others, following Jesus' example.
  • Through the process of sanctification, the Holy Spirit works within us to make us more like Jesus, completely motivated by love and free from the reign of sin over our lives.
  • God gives us the community of the church to support us and provide a place for us to grow in discipleship.

The Bible:

We believe that the Bible was inspired by God and contains all things necessary for salvation.  When read under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Bible is our true rule and guide for faith and practice.  It is the unique authority for our faith.  All of our preaching and teaching is based firmly and directly on the Bible.

The Holy Spirit:

We believe that the Holy Spirit is God’s presence in the world today.  We believe that every Christian is connected to one another and to God by the presence of the Holy Spirit.  We believe that the Holy Spirit empowers our worship, and and fills us with a sense of unity when we sing, pray and learn together.

The Sacraments:

We practice two sacraments, Baptism and Communion, ordained by Christ as symbols and pledges of God’s love for us.  Baptism can be performed in several ways, including immersion and pouring water over someone's head.  When we serve Holy Communion, non-alcoholic, pure grape juice is always used out of consideration for any people who are recovering alcoholics. We believe Christ's Spirit is present in the bread and juice at communion, although we do not believe in transubstantiation.  We practice the open table: all are welcome to receive communion in our worship services.
